If you have been looking for period underwear in South Africa, the search usually ends the same way: a pair that costs more than you expected, and no clear answer on what it will actually do for you. So let’s start with the honest version.
The Calm Wear brief is not a replacement for your pad, your cup or your tampon. On a heavy day, keep using what works. What it gives you is a thin, washable layer of protection and comfort underneath — the backup that catches the leak before your clothes do, and the reason you stop changing a pad “just in case” three times on a light day.

What it is, in one paragraph
A pair of high-waist black underwear with four thin layers sewn into the gusset: a stay-dry lining that passes moisture through, an absorbent core, a silent leak-proof barrier, and a soft 92% bamboo body. You wear it like normal underwear, rinse it, wash it with your laundry, and wear it again — the manufacturer rates it for 100+ washes at 30°C. No pad, no crinkle, no plastic backing, nothing to dispose of.
Why we call it an extra layer, not a pad replacement
Because that is what it honestly is, and we would rather you buy it for the right job:
- As a safety net on a normal day — instead of a liner you are not sure you need, wear the brief. Nothing shows, nothing sounds, and you stop thinking about it.
- As backup on a heavier day — keep your pad or cup, and let the brief catch anything that escapes. That is the leak that ruins a morning, not the flow itself.
- For the everyday leaks that have nothing to do with a period — the sneeze, the laugh, the jump at gym. Most of those are 1–5ml, and this brief is tested dry to the touch at 12ml.
What it is not built for is a heavy flow day on its own, or a full overnight. We will happily tell you that rather than let you find out in a review.

What it saves you a month
Here is the arithmetic on ordinary South African prices, with the assumptions written down so you can check them:
| Disposable liners as backup | Calm Wear brief | |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | A liner or two a day on the days you feel unsure | One brief, washed and worn again |
| Cost per use | About R2 to R5 each | About R5 a wear on a single pair, R3 a wear in a 4-pack (100+ washes) |
| Per month (20 days) | R40 to R100, every month, forever | Nothing after the first purchase |
| Per year | R480 to R1,200 — and nothing to show for it | R1,196 for a 4-pack that covers about a year of daily backup |
| Year two onwards | You buy them again | R0 |
The honest read: if you use one cheap liner a day, year one costs roughly the same either way — and from year two the brief is free while the liners keep coming. If you use two a day, or you are buying pads as well, it starts saving you money inside the first year. Either way, the monthly line stops going out of your account.
What we are not claiming: those figures assume 20 days of use a month, liners at R2–R5, and they ignore the cents of hot water and detergent in a 30°C wash. Your own habits will move the numbers around; the shape of it — a bill that stops versus a bill that never does — will not.
Choose your pack
One brief is a trial. Three is comfortable — buy two and the third is free. Four is the practical rotation: one on, one in the wash, two spare, and the best price per pair.
- 1 pair — R498 · about R5 a wear
- 3 pairs — R996 · buy two, get one free · about R332 a pair
- 4 pairs — R1,196 · about R299 a pair, the best value · one in the wash, one on, and spares for the days that go sideways

Sizing: measure your waist, not your dress size
Measure just below the belly button, where a belt sits, and keep the tape level. The ranges don’t overlap, so one measurement lands you on exactly one size — and a snug band seals better than a loose one.

Underwear is a hygiene product, so returns and exchanges aren’t possible once it has been delivered — the same standard every retailer applies. So measure first, and if you are unsure, message us with your waist in centimetres and we will confirm your size before you order. If a parcel ever arrives faulty or wrong, we replace it and cover the shipping both ways.
Washing it is not a project
Rinse cold, machine wash at 30°C with your normal load, skip the fabric softener (it coats the absorbent core), and line dry. That’s the whole routine.

Period underwear questions, answered
Can I wear it instead of a pad?
On light to moderate days, yes — that’s exactly the job. On heavy days, wear it under your usual protection as a backup rather than instead of it.
Does it smell?
Less than a pad. The absorbent core pulls moisture away from the surface and the barrier keeps it contained, so there is no damp pad sitting against you all day.
How many pairs do I need?
Three to five for a period, so one can be in the wash while you wear another. Most people start with three and add a fourth.
Is it hygienic?
Yes, if you rinse it cold after wearing and wash it properly — the same standard as any reusable menstrual product. Never use fabric softener.
Does it work for bladder leaks as well?
Yes, and that’s why the category has grown so quickly. Everyday bladder leaks are usually 1–5ml, well inside what this brief handles.
